a nifty 1/2 hr video Called Naturalbreastfeeding.com by Nancy Mohrbacher. I don't know why I haven't heard of it before.. I was talking to an IBCLC who works for WIC and she told be that football hold has become the standard suggestion for new moms in the hospitals in our area. She pushes the moms to see the video while pregnant and then use that technique in the hospital in spite of what the nurses/IBCLCs tell the mom!
How do we get into these funny situations? How does what happens in the hospital impact mothers' continuing to breastfeed 3 days later at home. What's so scary about laid back breastfeeding that moms aren't shown several ways to hold the baby (I know the nurses/IBCLCs don't have enough time....but they could put the video on for the mom to watch. It's free.)
Every mom and every baby has unique physiology. We shouldn't expect one position to work for all (60 years ago I held my BFing baby like I was bottle feeding her and when she wanted to nurse every few hours I just knew I didn't have enough milk).
The advertisement for one local hospital says their breastfeeding classes will teach the 'correct' way to position the baby. Don't they know that every dyad is different?
I plan to tell my WIC friend to write about 'positioning' and why different things work for different dyads! Pat in SNJ
