Many reputed galactogogue herbs have estrogenic properties. Human estrogen itself is interesting; it stimulates prolactin in the pituitary and it stimulates ductile growth in the breast, but also suppresses milk synthesis in lactation. When we are talking about herbs with estrogenic properties, that does not necessarily equate to "bad for lactation" and in fact it is the estrogenic properties that are often cited as a potential means for enhancing lactation- see Tabares. It was Sheila Humphrey who first explained all of this to me.
