I wish to add my support to the comments of Maureen Minchin in response to
the very helpful submission by Pamela Morrison (Lactnet 18-19 Feb 2016).
Whilst we continue to exhort the ‘benefits of  [the norm based on at least
65 million years of primate evolution] breastfeeding’ rather than the
disadvantages and realities of formula, women will continue to struggle
with breastfeeding. After all, we do not recommend resorting to cigarette
smoking when one has difficulties with breathing!!! I refer colleagues to
the valuable words of Diane Wiessinger [WABA E-Newsletter Vol.10, No.1
April 2012 http://www.waba.org.my/pdf/mstfnl_v10n1_eng.pdf]

“The single most important job we breastfeeding promoters face is not to
convince the public of breastfeeding’s superiority. It is to create a
united force demanding that researchers and the journals in which they
publish focus on the experiment, not on the control group. All the rest –
media reports, imagery, perceptions, motivation – will take care of itself".

"Breastfeeding is not “best for babies”, just as air is not “best for
breathing”. Breastfeeding, like breathing air, is our biological norm.
Formula-feeding is by definition the experiment. Properly performed
research focuses on the experimental group."
