Dear Lactnet Friends:
Thanks Liz Brooks for the links. I looked at this one:
https://www.colorado.gov/pacific/sites/default/files/MJ_RMEP_Pregnancy-Breastfeeding-Clinical-Guidelines.pdf
This link makes it sound like the reasons a mother would use cannabis are
medical: nausea, depression or anxiety. Nowhere is mentioned fun. Cannabis
is a recreational drug, yet this is not mentioned.
In this one paragraph, the word may is used 3 times:
"Language for patients: Using marijuana while pregnant may harm your baby.
It may make it hard for your child to pay attention and learn. This also
may make it harder for your child to do well in school."
Folks have been smoking cannabis world-wide for centuries. If there was a
serious medical problem, we would know about it now. As an example, we
know about Fetal Alcohol Syndrome; there is nothing like that about
cannabis. Tobacco smoke makes babies of low birth weight or premature, and
increases SIDS risk.
I think it is silly to say that this herb is acceptable to smoke and that
herb isn't. I am convinced that our message has to be three-fold:
1) Smoking anything is bad for the baby during pregnancy.
2) Any smoke is bad for babies after they are born.
3) Babies need sober caretakers.
warmly,
