The reason for post-feed pumping, as you know, is to ensure effective,
thorough drainage of the breasts. This will maintain / increase production
and provide ebm for a baby who might need more milk after the breastfeed.
If the breasts are being thoroughly drained at the feeds, with the shield,
and once production is at a good level and maintaining, and once baby is
having consistent gains - then post-feed pumping can be discontinued, in my
opinion.
Lactating mothers should be taught and talked to about always monitoring
their breasts and production / baby's happiness and growth.
Some things that come into play (possibly about the time mother is
discontinuing post-feed pumping) would be: return to work, birth control
hormone, baby sleeping longer, introduction of a pacifier, introduction of
a bottle of pumped ebm, mother dieting. These things could affect her milk
production.
