Dear Lactnet Friends:
Alla writes:
"
Interestingly enough there was a very good discussion on freakonomics (both
books and on line discussions) about the effect of volunteer ("free")
donations of organs and tissues on the said organs/tissues supply. And the
conclusion was that the system of volunteer ("free") donations of the
organs, blood and other tissues was actually one if the causes of the
shortages...
"
I read this too; the specifics were that kidney donors are scarce in the US
and many on a waiting list die because there are no kidneys available.
Whereas in Iran, donors are paid and more people can consequently get the
organs they need. The Iranian program is successful.
On the other side of the coin, paying mothers for their milk can lead to
adulteration of the milk with other substances. Blood donors are no longer
paid because alcoholics and addicts were selling their blood to get money
for their substance abuse.
Not an easy topic. Maybe it has something to do with limited supply, i.e. a
donor has but one kidney to sell, whereas a person has a virtually
unlimited supply of blood (or milk)?
What do you all think?
warmly,
