2 chapters from a book, probably from dear Chris Mulford, she just didn't note the title or date of the book! :-( They are Chapter 8: Breast or Bottle and Chapter 10: The First Two Weeks. If this rings a bell with anyone, I'd love to know it's title and date.
The thing that jumped out at me was " Given the wish and with well-informed help, nearly all mothers - probably 95%-can breastfeed, as Waller (1946) found in Woolwich and as Sedgewick (1921) showed in Minneapolis. Language and spelling seem British.
I immediately went to read Dr Waller's 1946 article (don't have Sedgwick-will work on that) "The Early Failure of Breastfeeding: A Clinical Study of Its Causes and Their Prevention." Arch Dis Child, 1946, 21(105):1-12. Dr Waller quickly honed in on stimulation in the early days and weeks is the key to duration of lactation and that hospital practices of the time worked against this. ( I remember in 1959, staying 7 days with my first and nursing every 4 hours and not at night and wondering where my milk went by 2 1/2 weeks :-(
Another note about book chapters, most of refs seem to be 1960's. Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas to all. Pat in SNJ
