From my daughter, Dr. Emily A.Bruce, Ph.D, virologist.

"The first thing I would confirm is whether the Mom has actually tested positive for influenza (on a test that is specifically confirming the virus, rather than just bad cold symptoms). I can't comment on the chances of there being virus in the milk as I don't know that literature, but it seems that if they are happy to give pumped milk that infection control measures might be able to mitigate the transmission risk while also allowing the Mom to establish breastfeeding and supply. Washing hands, a mask and potentially a clean gown could be used. H1N1 is one of the normally circulating strains at this point, it's not particularly more concerning than other seasonal strains- but that said the flu is a serious illness particularly for infants (and also for pregnant woman- who should get flu shots!) If this Mom got the flu shot her baby may have some protection that way, and will certainly gain antibodies from the breast milk (if Mom is indeed infected with influenza). "
