Dear Lactnet Friends:
Kika ask about supplemental iron interfering with lactoferrin. I have heard
this since at least the 90s.
I looked for research supporting this.

Lawrence and Lawrence, on page 526 in their 2011 edition of Breastfeeding:
A Guide for the Medical Profession, make this comment: "Providing iron,
however, interferes with the immunologic properties of human milk,
especially the bacteriostatic properties of lactoferrin in the gut."
I am sure her bibliography will yield more evidence to support this
sentence.
