Hello all!
I am doing an inservice at our OB unit meeting at the end of the month. I would like some data discussing why nipple shields should not be used as a first line tool for babies who do not latch immediately. We have "some" nurses who give a nipple shield to all moms who have the slightest bit of struggle with latch. Baby will be 6 hours old and mom will be using a nipple shield by the time I see them. It is very frustrating. I have asked management to take the nipple shields off the floor. They don't want to remove them, but would like me to discuss when a nipple shield is warranted. I did some researching and have been unable to come up with evidence based data. I must not be looking in the right places?
Any info you can direct me to is greatly appreciated!
Thanks for all you do and the knowledge I glean daily from this amazing site.
Respectfully,
Kim Kuopus FNP, IBCLC
