When an infant requires supplementation and the mother is using a nipple
shield, it is a reasonable option to run the tubing from a tube feeding
device either under or over the nipple shield so that the infant may
continue feeding at the breast with assistance. This avoids the use of a
bottle which has the potential to further weaken infant sucking and add yet
another shape, texture, and foreign object into the infant mouth.
