Talk to me about prolactin receptors. No matter the physiologic cause, the milk-making components of the breast will involute if they are not asked to make milk....But I am not finding much in the literature about prolactin receptors, at least not in the past 15 years. It seems like pressures are the current thinking - if the breasts are not well-emptied, pressure on the lactocytes leads to apoptosis and eventually to involution.
Where do I need to go to find more? Hale & Hartmann's textbook was useful (Ack! I actually understood a lot of it!) but it's pretty archival at this point. I have done a literature search including Zoubiane et al (2003) and related articles -- but it's leading me to info on superbugs.
One of my colleagues was just at a breastfeeding training and informed me "if the prolactin receptors aren't properly primed with prolactin in the first days, cell death will occur." I thought this was theory. And she couldn't find the reference in her materials.
Help!
