We have had a policy re fresh donor milk in the NICU since 2000 - we don't use it unless the donor goes through the same screening as a donor to a HMBANA milk bank. There is a policy in the CPQCC Toolkit from 2008. The risk of CMV and other contamination is too high for NICU babies to use unscreened milk. The risk would be lower to term or late preterm infants in the hospital with their mothers, but not zero. No hospital attorney will OK uncreened donor milk in any hospital.
Of course, the mother may choose to pass off someone else's milk as her own and not be honest with us.
