Hi Sheila, Often I don't know the acuity until I get in a mother's room and find out how baby has been, or not been, feeding. sometimes I know before I enter a room if the report has been baby not latching or mother who has pushed for 4 hrs then ended up with a c/birth. In the case of a late pre-term baby, that will usually take more time explaining some of the extra-sleepy behavior and assisting with proper use of a breast pump, and how to supplement baby if needed. I like finger feeding or adding milk at the breast with a soft dropper. A mother with sore nipples will take me 20-30 minutes. I short visit to a multip whose baby is nursing well can be 5-10 minutes, then 4-5 minutes of charting. As stated above, a complex visit can be 30-45 minutes. then probably stopping by again in the afternoon. susan in MN, usa rn ibclc
