Dear Lactnet Friends:
The Centers for Disease Control collect data on breastfeeding: exclusivity,
initiation, and duration, using the standard definitions.
WIC collects information too; but their definition of exclusive
breastfeeding is means that a mother does not get any formula from WIC.
Here's more WIC definitions:
"Breastfeeding means the practice of feeding a mother's breast milk to her
infant(s) on the average of at least once a day.
Breastfeeding women means women up to one year postpartum who are
breastfeeding their infants."
Gabrielle Palmer has a lovely chapter in her 3rd edition of the Politics of
Breastfeeding about WIC corruption by industry.
warmly,
