I live near a very orthodox Jewish community and work with moms there all the time. I am Jewish and relatively well informed but my "brand" of Jewish is different than theirs. (It is a Satmar community).
All that has been said here about pumping has been my experience as well. The only thing that hasn't been mentioned is that the mothers tell me they must discard any milk that they pump on Shabbat, unless the baby will come to harm without it-and even that is tricky. And they need to talk to the Rabbi before and get direction for that.
It always breaks my heart when an mom is pumping to increase her supply and has to discard her very precious milk! But I have the world of respect for their commitments to both their way of life and their babies!
