When I was a student, I had a client whose 3 month old baby would "burp up" after breast feeds, but not after the father gave a 6 ounce bottle of mother's milk at 4:00 in the morning. Now, this "burp up" (mother's words) was about 2 teaspoons (that's an estimate of what I saw on the floor), so not a whole lot. The mother had leaky gut, was on a very restricted diet, and took several medications. When Jennifer Tow talks about diet, particularly gluten, causing over-production, I think of this family. Also, I think part of it was that she had had previous bad experiences with breastfeeding leading to early weaning, and didn't really know what was normal. Anyway, her family did a trial over a weekend with some specialty formula, Alimentum, I think it was, and weaned after that.
So, perhaps some mothers have flow that is faster than bottle flow and that causes tummy troubles. Perhaps the mother is eating EFLs (Edible food-like substances) that the baby (rightfully) is reacting to. Perhaps the trouble is gluten or soy or non-human milk. Perhaps caffeine or jalapenos are causing the problem. Perhaps the vomiting is just a bit of spit up which is a laundry problem and not a health problem. Perhaps the mother doesn't want to breastfeed and is looking for a kosher way out.
