There are a few situations where a large, heterogeneous sample may show
some false associations (associations only by chance) such as Genome
Wide Association Studies (GWAS). In a GWAS, people the health issue in
question (they have been done for schizophrenia, high BMI, etc) are
genotyped, and those that are more common than in the general population
are flagged. Much of the time, when there are more careful studies, the
contributions of the alleles identified in GWAS studies are found to be
negligible or negative. New studies use some statistical methods to help
compensate for the higher risk of associations by chance, such as
lowering the p value for statistical significance when multiple
traits/genes/characteristics are simultaneously studied in a large group.
Science can be tricky.
