Calling all hospital based IBCLCs, MDs or APRN's. Do you or your staff routinely order a lactation consult for moms after fetal loss? Does a lactation professional see moms after a stillbirth or a fetal demise post delivery? We discuss what to expect with engorgement, the possibility of donation, and guidance and written resources for involution if mom chooses. We have also referenced Melissa Coles' excellent care plan for suppression, as well as info for our local Milk Bank, if moms would be interested in donation. These consults ( when we know about them ) have always been at our initiative, and have always been met with gratitude from greiving moms. Unfortunately, our hospital policy just came up for review; and we were told lactation has no place in the care of parents post-fetal loss. I strongly disagree, and would like some input and experiences from other hospitals and practitioners.
Many thanks-
Lori Atkins, RN, IBCLC
