At the birth center where I work, we are trying to find a validated
telephone breastfeeding assessment tool for days 3-5, to be used by an RN
to decide whether a couplet needs to come in for evaluation. Currently we
are using LATCHES but wonder if there is something better out there.
In the Core Curriculum for LC Practice, p. 515, there is a table of tools:
IBFAT, SAID, LATCH, MBA, etc. but none look like they are designed for
telephone screening. I feel like there must be community/peer support
programs out there are using telephone screening tools that they could
share, even if they are not validated? Anyone have suggestions?
Thanks!
Rebecca Costello, IBCLC MPH
