Subject: Are you weighing your babies in the prone position?

Dear Lactnet members:

Back in 2006 there was a brief discussion here on Lactnet on the benefits of weighing babies in the prone position. When I taught maternity nursing I would discuss this with the students, but in all the hospitals I have worked in in the past decade - in Canada, and internationally, the routine of weighing babies supine persists.

I recently watched an NRP update video out of Seattle Children's Hospital (http://www.seattlechildrens.org/For-Healthcare-Professionals/Provider-and-Nursing-Grand-Rounds-Online-Videos/2013/NRP-in-Action--2013-Update-Through-Simulation/) and Jeanette Zaichkin, RN, MN, NNP-BC (editor of the NRP Instructor Manual), advises, as part of an aside discussion, that babies be weighed in the prone position (increased sense of security, less flailing around, scale measures quicker, more humane).

I'd like to know what the Lactnet members current routine practice is, and what your thoughts are on this.

Thanks, Lani
