Over the past 5 or so years, I have had the opportunity, as a WIC IBCLC, to help many of the immigrating Afghanistan families. Their stories are heartwarming, or sometimes heart-wrenching. Dads are often the family spokesperson as mom's English is very limited or non-existent. I often just listen, and such was the case for this dad and his wife who were doing their best to navigate the complicated health care system in a foreign country while mom needed medical care. I helped as best I could while supporting the family. He was very grateful and when we said our goodbyes, he said to me: "when my daughter is old enough to understand, I will tell her, you are her second mother." I literally cried. It is a moment I will never, ever forget. Bless these families.
