This is very bad science, Brenda. Babies get a significant percentage of their nutrition from night feeds, which belies the old idea that if night fees are withheld, they'll take all they need in the daytime. It looks as if the baby's family doctor was trained when this idea was taken as fact. It was rife in Australia pre- and post-World War II.

As a reference, there's a paper in Pediatrics by Dr Jackie Kent and colleagues, from the University of Western Australia. I don't have the publication details, but I think it was 2006, and it covers what you need to know.

Subject: night training

A patient had an infant born with a weight of 6-15. The infant is 3.75 months old and now weighs 15-4. The baby is breastfed and sleeps up to 6 hours at night.
Her family doctor informed her to start night training as the baby could sleep up to 12 hours at night. So the mother was advised when her baby wakes up to just let him cry and not breastfed him.
Has anyone heard of this as I feel this is like scheduled feeding?
Thank you
