My understanding re herbal galactagogues, latest evidence-based info, is
that they are not a proven strategy for increasing milk supply. I beleive
the Academy of BF Medicine has a paper out??
For various other reasons, such as is it an approved medicine? quality
control of doses? who will prescribe it? does it need a prescription? Are
you in the USA? I can't imagine any hospital I have ever worked in southern
USA (quite a few over 34 yrs) would approve that.
Here are some other ideas that might help:
1. Provide recipe for cookies made with galactagogue ingredients. Mothers
or staff or volunteers could provide ingredients or make the cookies. Have
tea with them once a day? Another source of galactagogues would be the tea,
again, if you really feel the herbs are necessary.
2. Is there a mother to mother support group in place? If not can you start
one? Here, mothers can share what worked or did not for supply issues,
decrease stress, and the group oxytocin effect could help. You could also
offer a communal expressing room, for the mothers who would accept that. I
am picturing hand expressing.
3. Provide nutritious meals instead. At some hospitals, mothers are just
snacking and barely eating properly if they are having to get their own
meals. If full meals are not an option, then maybe 3 healthful snacks a
day could be provided? If you were going to charge for the fenugreek,
perhaps you can charge for the meals in some way, or have it built into the
daily cost of baby's care?
4. By the same token, many mothers are not getting restful sleep or even
any rest, depending on the accomodations that are provided for them. Maybe
looking at what the sleep arrangements are and could other/extra beds,
cots, chair/beds be provided?
4. Is donor milk available from a local milk bank or hospital milk bank? If
not, this may be a great area to put your efforts into so that there would
be human milk for the babies if a mother's supply was not fulling meeting
baby's needs.
I am just thinking outside the box.
