With my pediatrician's hat on - it is extremely important both for any baby over the age of 6 months and for EVERYBODY around any babies and/or pregnant women to get vaccinated against flu.
Flu vaccine does not cause flu.
Flu vaccine does not cause problems with immunity.
Flu vaccine protects from the flu and/or at least decreases the duration/severity of the disease.
Flu vaccine works the best if everybody (or at least almost everybody) around the baby/pregnant women would be vaccinated.
Vaccinating pregnant women against flu (and whooping cough) does protect not only them, but also their unborn babies.
Just two cases from this year.
A mother of a 12 no old baby did refuse flu vaccination stating that none if her 6 kids ever had flu, so no way she will give this "unnecessary" vaccination (out of her 6 kids 2 have autism and therefore all kids were almost unvaccinated when they came to my office). In January the baby had a nasty flu with febrile seizures. As of today the whole family (including mother, grand parents and great grand parents) are vaccinated against flu.
Second case is a 10 mo old baby who got his flu vaccination in May/June of this year (babies do need 2 doses in the first year of vaccination and it is recommended to vaccinate babies till the end of June). The kid does attend the day case and did happen to be my first case of documented flu this (2014/2015) season. The kid was very sick for... 24 hours! Parents did not even start the Tamiflu before the kid got better.
We can not vaccinate against enterovirus 68, we can not vaccinate against Ebola, but we can and should promote flu vaccination for ourselves and our patients against flu.
FLU CAN BE DEADLY
EVERY YEAR FLU KILLS MORE PEOPLE THEN EBOLA
BUT - WE CAN PROTECT OURSELVES, OUR FAMILIES AND OUR PATIENTS.
