Permission to post from caller. Caller asking if there are any laws in place in the state of Illinois that would support a mother wishing to breastfeed her 4 month old baby during meetings which are held once a month. The baby refuses a bottle. Mother now parents much as those following "attachment parenting" philosophy, in a small way due to the support and info she's received from this very program. The meetings are in a community center and the program rents one of the rooms for its meetings. This mother is on the committee as a volunteer parent. The program is designed with input from "experts" and with parents themselves. The committee is for a federally funded parenting support program in her area. She was told that bringing a baby to the meeting and breastfeeding would be "much too distracting". This program is one that encourages breastfeeding, provides teaching in areas of child development, gentle discipline; all areas of parenting the young infant through toddlerhood. Is this mother's only option to either be on the committee or decline being a member? The caller and others who work for this program are "appalled" that given what this program is all about, they would refuse this young mother's request. Anyone have information or suggestions to share? Thank you very much.
