What is your water bottle preference? When offered a water bottle with a sports closure, do you prefer to drink from the sports closure, or do you have greater motor control if you remove the entire closure (cap) and drink straight from the bottle, preferring that method? In my informal surveys, respondents often state that they would rather drink straight from the bottle without the sports closure (“It’s less work, and I’m less likely to spill it all over me!”). And here we’re talking about adults who, following years of practice, have acquired a repertoire of eating and drinking skills. When we have a repertoire of feeding skills, there is no crisis when one prefers to eat with fork and spoon rather than eating with chopsticks, and when one prefers to eat with chopsticks rather than a fork and spoon, there is no feeding crsis as a result of this individual preference. For the newborn without any repertoire of feeding skills, a feeding crisis often results when attempting to learn two similar yet different milk-feeding methods over a close time span, particularly when the reward is the rapid gravity-flow with the first suck in bottle-feeding, as compared to the physiologic release of milk from the maternal breast, which typically occurs within one to 2 minutes from the beginning of the feed for the initial milk release.
