and I love saline soaks for damaged nipples.  1/4 tsp salt in 1 c water, warm or cold - mom's preference - compresses or hold nipple in a teacup at breast.  3-4 x a day.  I honestly don't see as many sore nipples as back in the day because of better positioning right from the start.  Early on the tummy to tummy movement was the first significant change to make a difference and there have been other neat techniques shared since then, most of which have helped. The long "lack of breastfeeding" gap from the 20's-30's to 70's - 80's caused so many of those problems with positioning & latch.  We simply forgot how to do it.  Pat in SNJ
