hungry ants."

Boric acid. Commerically available under the brand name of Terro.  Comes in
a sugar/water/boric acid mix in a bee proof (if opened per instructions)
container. Place at the base of the posts.  Once ants are controlled at the
hive move out in a circle extending by a radius about 25/50 feet over the
course of the summer and eliminate all the ants in the area.
