What some people do not seem to understand is that in the winter months (which is differs by whether you are north or south of the equator) there are many parts of the globe where it is simply not possible from many people to get enough conversion of vitamin D from sunlight on the skin. The risk increases with distance from the equator. In Boston for instance, you cannot get enough vitamin D from sunlight for many months. Furthermore, those who live in areas of greater air pollution may have more difficulty as well.
So, yes in the summer months you can get enough vitamin D for that period of time, but depending on where you live you may not get enough in the winter. So, just believing you can sit out in the sun in the winter is not proof that you are getting enough from the sun. Low vitamin D has enough health issues associated with it that it would be a good idea to check to see if the "beliefs" about how much sun you are getting actually are confirmed with some evidence that you really a
