Brenda,
You are asking some very good questions: answers below from our experience at Mothers' Milk Bank Northeast. Answer below
==========================
I have a question for all of you who work with Milk Banks. If a mom experiences prenatal loss and donates milk, what is the average amount of time they continue to donate?
It varies widely, some moms have been collecting milk for their preemie babies, and they donate what they have collected. Others continue donating for days or a couple of weeks, sometimes months after the baby has died.
There is not minimum donation for bereaved mothers.
And if they are preterm, does that milk go speciffically to that gestational age or is it utilized by any baby in need?
Yes, preterm milk is processed separately and goes to preterm hospitalized babies.
My friend is a Heartprints counsellor, helping parents/families with loss at any stage, and has been thinking about offereing this option to mother's who would be interested. Thanks for your help!
HMBANA recently published a wonderful guide about milk donation and bereaved mothers. It's available on HMBANA.org under publications. A worthwhile book for anyone working with new families.
