I had a mom who commuted 90 miles each way for full-time school and used a
hand pump, both at school and in the car during the drive (ahem. I do not
recommend this, as not only was she not paying 100% attention to the road,
she shocked more than one trucker, which could be even more dangerous).
She was an amazing milk maker. I also have moms who are able to maintain
and even increase supply on the pumps made by formula/bottle companies and
sold at big box stores, which generally seem to shred moms' nipples and
ruin their supplies.
I think it varies from mom to mom, but I expect more moms are going to be
successful with quality double electric pumps as the standard.
