The first time I saw a hypertonic baby, it was definitely a lightbulb moment.  It's really distinctive, and will likely set off "not normal" bells in your head, very different from "unhappy baby," I think.

That first hypertonic baby was just rock hard tense everywhere, very forceful.  With parental permission, when I had a pinky in her mouth, I was able to lift her fully off the bed just by the strength of her suck on my finger.  Freaky, to be sure.  It was so nice to be able to tell the parents, especially the mom, that baby didn't hate her; baby had deeper issues.
