The baby I wrote about before, with the gritty stools, is gaining weight
really well now, with bottles of EBM after nursing. Mom perceives an
increase in supply. She can't keep up with what he can drink in the
bottles, though, and is concerned. The have started to offer some solids
to slow the depletion of her freezer stash.
The odd thing is that this kiddo will drink and drink until he vomits, and
very happily drink some more. He had only had a couple bottles in his
first 6mo, during date nights, when the same thing happened. Baby never
indicates satiety, but he's roly poly and smiley and interactive, so it's
not like he's starving by any stretch. He won't let go of a bottle, nor
has mom ever seen him milk drunk. He never cued hunger when I was there,
even though his weight %ile had dropped (the reason for calling me) and it
had been 5 hours since he had last eaten. Mom has been feeding on a loose
2-3 hour schedule just to make sure he remembers to eat. Mom mentioned
that at 2.5 weeks old she had been delayed somewhere and dad was concerned
about how long it had been, so he gave baby a 5oz bottle, which he drank in
on go and did not vomit.
What's up with a baby who cues neither hunger nor satiety?
