ICAN has published a new article "Decreasing Necrotizing Enterocolitis and Gastrointestinal Bleeding in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: The role of donor human milk diets in infants< 1500 g birth weight, Huston et al. Vol 6, No 2, April 2014. Very complicated article and confusing use of initials and figures $, BUT the end results were that Exclusive-human milk-based diet decreased NEC when compared to diets that included bovine based products and it is cost effective to use EHM diet for babies at higher risk of developing NEC. Also Exclusive human milk and DHM (mother's milk + banked human milk) diets decreased mortality when compared to formula + bovine fortifier. They also had figures showing that EHM with human milk fortifier saved $,b ut the numbers confused me (I've never been good at numbers - that's why we have 5 kids :-) also no big difference in growth parameters.
