Dear Lactnet Friends:
Babies don't pretend to be well to make their parents feel better. Trust
the baby, especially one that is gaining well and is acting fine.
I worked with a baby once who, once he cleared his meconium and got to
yellow, pooped once a week. He was always happy and gaining. I followed him
closely until it was clear that he was fine, and mom got used to the once a
week blow-out.
My own daughter pooped once every two weeks for about 6 months as an infant.
I have known these scarcely pooping babies to pass prodigious farts, where
mom would think that the baby had pooped, but no. Farting like that means
the poop will come, as the gut is active.
warmly,
