In either Freakonomics or Superfreakonomics, the authors cite an article that calls formula is the "unsung hero" of the working woman. I was unable to find it in the index of Superfreakonomics, so it may be in Freakonomics. The article linked above says that breastfeeding for more than 6 months decreases a working woman's earning power. It also dismisses nipple confusion and downplays the "benefits" of breastfeeding. *sigh* I wonder if the decrease in earning power is a cause or effect. Meaning, do women who choose to breastfeed for longer than 6 months sacrifice working for the benefit of their children (they WANT to make that choice) while women who choose to not breastfeed or do it for a shorter time sacrifice the benefit to the children for the benefit of working? In other words, is it the breastfeeding or the parent discrimination? There is quite a lot of parent discrimination at work. Fathers are seen as better employees because
they need to support their families while mothers are seen as worse workers because they need to be mothers. Perhaps employers view mothers who take breaks for pumping as less reliable employees, despite the research demonstrating the opposite.
Why do we have to choose between supporting our families and being families?
