Marla Newmark asks for input. I'm not experienced with fortifying milk as I
work on a regular postpartum ward, while babies who might be getting
fortified milk are in the NICU in our hospital. I am not sure how
many babies get fortified milk in my hospital, but I think it is a small
minority of the ones in the NICU, which cares for babies down to 28 weeks.
It's my understanding that fortifier is to be handled according to the same
guidelines as breastmilk substitutes, and breastmilk that has had fortifier
or any other nutrients added to it must be treated the same way. Therefore,
I would assume that such feeds would need to be made up immediately before
they were given, and certainly never more than one hour in advance.
If I am mistaken, please, someone who works with very low birthweight
babies, correct me.
