Dear Lactnet Friends:

Today in class, the topic was preparing formula, specifically powdered
formula that is not sterile.

A nurse in the class talked about liquid formula being commercially
sterile, as opposed to medically sterile. The topic came up because in the
OR, a nicked bladder has, for the past few decades, had liquid formula put
in it so that the cut can be found and sutured.

An OR worker discovered that the word 'sterile' is no longer on formula
labels. This led to a telephone call to the various formula companies, and
the decision by this hospital to use dye instead of liquid formula to
locate cuts in the bladder.
