Today a mom who had a vaginal birth to a full term infant and did skin to
skin and first feed in delivery suite, and then another good feed. Later
the baby wasn't latching and mom tried syringe feeding formula then bottle.
The baby sucked down over an ounce. When I came to help her of course it
made one wonder about nipple confusion or nipple preference. Pacifier also
was being used. (Pacifier use is ubiquitous here for some reason). But the
one thing I noticed was that mother was dressed and with a nursing cover
and the baby was dressed in a pretty outfit (2 layers) and headband. I felt
this was a big change. Luckily the mother was very receptive to more skin
to skin, expressing and spoonfeeding, and undressing the baby. Before I
left, the baby self-attached and had "the best feed so far."
