Dear all:
In my little slice of the universe in Manhattan, there are two things that cause weight gain to falter more often than anything else:
1) sleep training -- whereby the breasts are not drained frequently enough and go an especially long stretch without feeding at night
2) block feeding -- whereby the breasts are not drained frequently enough because they are only drained every other feed.
The combination of both together can get mothers down to draining their breasts very infrequently -- in cases where they have read the books that say babies should only be fed 4 times per day (which is not even enough for toddlers) -- a breast can be drained as infrequently as 2 x per day.
So, in the case mentioned of a baby that was "dropping down the weight curves", why was "block feeding" considered for a baby that is only feeding 6 x per day?
This would mean that each breast would only be drained 3 x per day which is a real milk supply killer for most mothers. It seems the antithesis of what is needed. Clearly, I must be missing something in this equation. My recommendation would be switch nursing.
Best regards,
Susan Burger
