To complicate matters, baby has gained only a few ounces in the past
month. Could eczema be related to low weight gain? Pediatrician recommends
strict elimination diet or to stop breastfeeding and feed EleCare formula. I
would appreciate any comments
~~~ Hello Malka, and all,
I have seen in several babies with bad eczema that they do not gain, yes.
Often they are very uncomfortable, and are rarely "still" so I wonder if
their energy requirements might be higher. I also wonder about the function
of their gut to actually use nutrients perhaps being part of the issue as
well. One baby did better when mom only breastfed a few times a day and
supplemented/replaced with something like EleCare, or the Nutramigen AA one. She
eventually found a "tipping point" with the highest level of breastfeeding
and lowest level of AIM that would help the baby be comfortable, and gain
a little better. He did grow up to be a very skinny teen and young adult.
In another situation the pediatric gastroenterologist assumed that I would
be against this, but actually I had brought it up with the mom before our
visit. The baby was miserable, the mom could not ever really "clear" her milk
of whatever the baby couldn't tolerate ( family sabotage was an issue,
among other things), and it seemed like something to explore. He was very
nice, and listened to mom's desire to exclusively breastfeed ( even though her
milk supply wasn't really full either, another issue why supplementation
was on the table from my end). He noted that if the baby was at least
partially or mostly breastfeeding, maybe they could try the Vanilla EleCare or AA
( memory....ugh) for toddlers because the regular ones are so awful
smelling and tasting.
Just some thoughts,
Peace,
Judy... another Brooklynite...:)
