I took first exam in 1985 and was hired by a local hospital and began to
work there in summer of 1986 as IBCLC.
(They were scared to death of a dr who hired a non nurse IBCLC to see his
patients.) Latch was important becasue so many babies showed the effects of
the way epidurals were given then, in doses, not continuous. If a dose was
given close to delivery it was SO hard to get the babies (especially boys)
to latch. I had to feel my way into the position, in a hospital that was
not known for being friendly to BF and a resistant staff. Learned a lot
along the way :-) Pat in SNJ
