I also use the "dog eats the shield" phrase. I also use the fact that many times, one night mom will grab baby half asleep, shield will be lost in the bedclothes and they will latch with no trouble a few times and not realize they aren't using the shield until morning light. This, in my experience is *often* the most common organic ns weaning tactic.
Of course, as someone else has said, if baby grabs the shield and throws it and then latches well, it's probably not needed anymore, also.
