Hello all,
What a great opportunity. I've been working very closely with a local SLT
for the past few weeks concerning 2 different babies - one a 4 month old,
the other 8 months old. This woman is dedicated and supportive of
breastfeeding and has years of experience, but we are finding that we often have very
different views on many things. Today we discussed the differences in what
we view as normal feeding "sizes": example, I tell moms that a baby may be
perfectly happy and grow well on 2.5 to 4 oz per feed, after 6 weeks until
they get into solids a bit ( using Marsha Walker's info), whereas the SLT
felt that every baby should be able to drink 6 oz from a bottle within 5
minutes by the time they are 4 months old. Her mentor, an expert in OralMotor
Function at Columbia ( who I took one class from during my own graduate
work there, at the time having nothing to do with normal feeding (
breastfeeding)), also strongly promotes this a a norm. Another issue is the idea that
every baby should being experiencing spoon feeding by the end of three
months. Her idea was that it should be 3 small teaspoons as sort of tests to
make sure that the baby can begin the transition to solids without a problem
as they get older and not wanting to figure this out when a baby is
already 6 months old and should be eating solids. I listened, I want to hear her
perspective. I also shared the new AAP statement and WHO/UNICEF guidelines
that say exclusive breastfeeding til "about 6 months". She was shocked and
said she would need to bring this to her mentor at Columbia. I don't think
our disciplines cross as much as the should. We both said we liked hearing
each other's perspectives, and the chance to learn more as we work
together. But it is kind of amazing how different our views are on many things.
Hope this is helpful.
Peace,
Judy
