Michelle has asked about the use of Skype consults. A workshop entitled
"Providing Professional Breastfeeding Support via Internet Technology" will
be presented at the US Lactation Consultant Association conference May 3-5
in St. Louis. The concept of video conferencing is starting to be explored
more seriously as breastfeeding becomes more prominent in the public health
arena. This is especially needed in areas where professional breastfeeding
support or any breastfeeding support is lacking. There has been a term
coined to describe this situation, called "first food deserts." NPR had a
story on this which can be found at
http://www.npr.org/2013/03/19/174738256/breast-feeding-mothers-living-in-first-food-deserts.
It would be wonderful if mothers living in first food deserts had access to
professional support through internet technology. This would certainly be
better than nothing at all.
