Dear Lactnet Friends:

I wish folks would stop saying that formula is "good"; that term implies
something different to the public than to us. For the public, "Good" means
"okay, fine, and safe to use." Formula was designed as a replacement food
that would keep babies alive when human milk was not available.

I love the 'processed' versus 'fresh' food viewpoint. Brilliant!! A way to
be accurate that is compassionate and educational.

Lactnetters know that commercially made formula is full of pollutants,
cheap ingredients, genetically altered components and chemicals no human
has metabolic pathways to digest. Lactnetters know that formula stays in
the stomach a long time, and in the gut a short time, the exact opposite of
how human milk is digested. Lactnetters know that formula is strongly
associated with obesity, diabetes (both types) and doubles the risk of
death from SIDS; that 's not considering the increased risk of ear
infections, diarrhea, etc. etc. That is not "good". Formula is useful when
a baby must be fed and there is nothing else available.

Informal milk sharing is wonderful, as long as women get their milk
locally, from a mother that they can meet, and whose baby they can see to
be thriving, and as long as the organizations adhere to their principles
that milk not be sold. Yes, there are risks and those risks are nothing
compared to the risks of non-human milks.

warmly,
