Hi Judy:
It is challenging wooing an older baby into breastfeeding -- they are
getting ready to use their mouths in new ways for solids, and aren't as
interested in learning more about sucking. Sometimes it also helps to
play up that all the attempts are good for the baby -- all that touch
and interaction and face-to-face and skin-to-skin are valuable, so even
if the baby doesn't latch that day, she's not wasting her time. Being
pulled in all those directions with her busy family, it's good for this
youngest member to get some special time. If she stops if the baby
seems frustrated, she's also conveying that the world is a lovely place
where we all listen to each other -- no one is trying to make the baby
do anything.
Perhaps look at all the stuff about wooing an older adopted baby into
breastfeeding, in little baby steps, with the bottle alongside the
breast, turned into mom's body in a breastfeeding position, etc.. She
has the added advantage of having a lot of milk waiting for the baby
(not usually the case in an induced supply), which is very motivating
for his learning. A shield is difficult to use with an active older
baby with busy hands, but it might be a little bridge between bottle and
breast.
