Hand expression is far more effective in the early days. Teaching
this as a skill is useful and is part of UNICEF Baby Friendly.
Good practice in the UK would be to hand express (only if necessary -
NOT if all is well) and then only use a pump when the milk has come
in.
Hand expressing needs no special equipment and gets the mother
familiar with her body - and it collects colostrum better :)
