Dear Lactnet Friends:
The mother of a 4-day old called the local warmline last night about her
"gassy"
baby. I took the call. She and her baby were doing great; baby was already
pooping lots of
mustard.
She asked also about scheduling. Her interpretation of what she was told in
the
hospital was to make sure baby had "good feeds" for 10 to 30 minutes so she
could get to a 3-hour interval between feeds. Her husband was worried
because
the baby only nursed for 8 minutes on one side and then went to sleep.
Mom and dad were on speaker phone so we could all discuss this together.
Mom and dad both get a drink or a snack whenever they want. Neither mom or
dad
is trying to double their size. They quickly understood that baby is just
like
them in terms of wanting a drink or snack whenever it wants, AND baby IS
trying
to double its size.
I've seen hospital breastfeeding policies that state, "Mothers should be
taught to nurse babies on cue, at least every 2-3 hours." Why can't we get
rid of clocks in the nursery?
warmly,
--
